Mobile marketing can be broken up and defined into two categories. One form of mobile marketing is done through mobile devices, or cell phones, and is delivered primarily through the form of text messaging. Another form of mobile marketing is marketing in a moving fashion (i.e moving billboards). The first successful advertising campaign done through SMS(Short Message Service) in North America was by the LaBatt Brewing Company in 2002. Within the realm of mobile marketing on cell phones, there are many subtexts as well, and these include: Mobile marketing via MMS (Multimedia Message Service), In-Game Mobile Marketing, Mobile Web Marketing, Mobile Marketing via Bluetooth, Mobile Marketing via Infrared, and Mobile Viral Marketing.
Mobile Marketing via MMS is a form of marketing that can contain a timed slideshow of images, text, audio, and video. This form of marketing has proven effective for companies because it allows for them to send their messages to consumers in a lively manner and helps capture their attention.
In-Game Mobile Marketing is another major form of mobile marketing, and is a more up and coming field. Within In-Game Mobile Marketing there are four major trends and those are: Interactive real-time 3D games, massive multi-player games, and social networking games. This allows for more sophisticated game play and allows for companies to deliver messages within mobile games to reach their target audiences.
Bluetooth Marketing is an up and coming form within the field of mobile marketing. The way this works is whenever a consumer turns on their Bluetooth mobile device, they are asked if they would like to receive a message. This form of marketing is not very effective because there is not a very high ratio of people who utilize Bluetooth technology. What most companies do is if the user chooses to accept the Bluetooth message, they will usually receive a promotional code of some sort for their benefit.
Mobile Marketing via Infrared is the most ineffective and limited form of mobile marketing. Very few companies use infrared technology because it is a very outdated technology with a very limited range (approx 10 cm to 1 meter), so it would not really reach consumers, not to mention most consumers do not utilize infrared technology either.
Mobile Viral Marketing is a up and coming form of marketing which is primarily geared towards the concepts of distribution or communication that relies on consumers to transmit content via mobile communication techniques and mobile devices to other consumers in their social sphere and to animate these contacts.
